| Sports bras can be classified into either the encapsulation type with molded cups, or compression bras that restrict movement by flattening the breasts. Encapsulation is generally better for reducing discomfort; some women prefer compression designs for modesty.
A number of women find sports bras helpful for easing pain and discomfort associated with vigorous exercise. Some sports bras are meant to be worn as outerwear, i.e. jogging. Most research has found that bra discomfort is directly related to the degree of nipple movement. Sports bras tend to be more effective in reducing nipple motion than standard bras, but effectiveness varies.
